As a man raised by a single mom, I saw my heroic mom go to work everyday, in the 1970′s, wearing a smart pantsuit or other nice clothes. This enabled us, her four children, and our mom to have a much better life. For single moms, they can enjoy the freedom of being able to choose their own lives, date when they want to and live their own lives, as they see fit. With my mom, she was working at high-pressure, high-paying jobs years before many other women did similar jobs. A modern day suffragette. who went on to have a not too bad of life until her passing in 2009. Many young women in the early 21st century can be single moms by choice: have a baby without a husband, or live on her own, without her former husband or partner, on a life of her own choosing.

There are many women, who go to sperm banks or use online sperm donors to have a baby and be a single parent. Some are lesbians in relationships, some are women just wanting to have a baby without a father. Many single mothers are just the product of divorce, separation or indifference. Whatever, the case single motherhood is alive and well. The single moms generally go on, after making the necessary adjustments to their lives and the lives of their children. In the case of my mom, she had her ups and downs with her subsequent partners, but generally she had a great life and lived to see a number of grandchildren. A single mom has freedom.

The downside of it can be huge financial upheaval, in the beginning, as they have to get child support, alimony payments and financial assets sorted through. In the case of women choosing to be single moms, they usually have their finances in order. In their case, the child may grow up not knowing the father-or just learning the whole truth later. Many have a working same-sex partner that can contribute to the finances. Whatever the case, the finances are obviously one of the keys for an emerging single parent to survive and cop. Usually, the first 6 months to a year after separation and divorce can be the hardest on a single mother. Her ex may be very spiteful and try to inflict as much pain as possible. As a result, getting proper child support and alimony payments may take some time to settle down.

Therefore, the cons of it can be financial upheaval in a separated or divorced relationship for the single mother. Loneliness, feelings of isolation, being overwhelmed with everything may follow. They can also feel pressure from the children over their dad and can feel like she’s caught in the middle between her children and their father. The kid’s dad might use dirty tactics against her, to turn the kids against. However, many single moms eventually persevere, making the transition into a better life-my mom did.
